Your first (firearm) love?

We talk a lot here about what to look for in a first gun, how to buy a first gun, etc. My father gave me his most recent copy of the NRA magazine, and it had an article on my very first gun in it. It all got me to wondering just what everyone's first guns were. So, true confessions! What was your first gun? How or why did you get it?

My first gun was a Remington Nylon 66 .22 in Mohawk brown. My dad gave it to me in 1971. My mother and sisters and I came home from a trip and my dad had placed the 66 on my pillow and a bolt action .22 on my sister's pillow (other sister was a toddler). My mother sighed, Oh, Hal!" and rolled her eyes in resignation, and my father in a mock-stern voice said, "God almighty! They're 8 and 9 years old! It's past time they learned to shoot!" I was ecstatic :yippee: when I realized they were .22s and not BB guns except...EXCEPT mine was plastic...well, it looked like plastic! :bear_angry: It looked like a toy! I loved it and hated it at the same time. I was horribly embarassed bringing it to the range! I thought everyone would be laughing at me and my plastic toy-like gun. Lol! I wanted a "real" gun, with a wood stock! A cowboy kind of gun!

Almost 40 years later, I still have that .22, and it still comes to the range with me sometimes. Never had a lick of trouble with it, and a lot of my friends through the years have learned to shoot with it. My 66 and I haven't been in a monogamous gun relationship in a long, long time, but it will always have a special place in my gunsafe.

So, what was your first gun love?

Its got to be the 25-35 my Dad gave me to use on the first Deer hunt when I was 13.

Its an odd lever gun. Born in 1917 according to Wallews Books--Thanks Wallew for looking it up for me.

Octogon barrel, out dated Cartridge, lever action thats worn out---but i love it. Its been around from Grand dad to father to me.

I've killed a couple of deer with it and just like it.

First true gun I bought for myself was my Glock 19. Thanks to GIM I started to collect firearms.

Too bad it was on the boat with the rest of the firearms.... :bawling:

First firearms were in the early 90's. Ordered at the same time, a Glock 21 and Colt Sportster Competition HBAR (AR15) before the Brady ban. Had a friend who got me into guns, and suggested what I should get.

My father bought a FN FAL around 1959 about 6 months before I was hatched and he gave me this Rifle when I turned 18.

Its one of 21 that were imported into Amerika

Its a GL of the G Series FN FAL discribed at the link below.

http://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/usr/wba...f_letter86.txt

Below is a pic of the one highlighted in red below. I almost bought it about 2 years ago.

Mine was one of rifles in the Blue highlighted text.

Recently the one highlighted in red sold for 15,000.00 just to give an idea of how rare this item is.

Re: Your first (firearm) love?

1976 - Ruger Mini 14 - starving college student - couldn't afford an AR-15
1978 - Colt Combat Commander - just turned 21
I still have both, but I can't remember the last time I fired either. They both have sentimental value. Mom and dad would have preferred that I not have firearms, but I remember overhearing one side of a telephone conversation that my mom was having with the neighbor. She said "we know he has guns, but we trust him". I so loved my mom.
Take care,

I got a Sheridan 5mm / 20 Cal "Silver Streak" pellet rifle at age 8. I could hardly pump it...only by inverting and holding the stock between my legs and pushing down on the pump. We lived out on the rural edge of town - Dad gave me a list of pests i could kill...no limit.....all I did for most days in the summer was hunt all day long....killed over 100 red squirrels and 150 chipmunks in a few summers.....just destroyed the populations. All winter i shot in the basement - nearly everyday.

Graduated to a Remington 510 Targetmaster single shot 22LR with peep sights....at age 11....compared to a pellet rifle....I thought I had a high powered African game killing rifle! I have made some amazing shots with that rifle.....I once shot a black bird sitting on a cat-tail at 150 yards...had to hold over about 15 inches and a foot to the side for windage...the best shot of my life.

There was an old washing machine someone dumped at the end of the 2 track going out in the field ....I could shoot and hit it at 350 yards with my 22LR - I think I had to hold over by about 15 or 20 feet.....got to where i could hit it better than 50% of the time on a calm day.

I did a lot of shooting as a kid.....and stuck with it and now compete....I've been shooting a lot for 33 years.

Got a Winchester 20ga single shot youth model at 12....traded up to a remington 870 pump at 16 years old....still have that 870...it is my primary skeet gun.

First pistol I bought when I turned 21 was a Ruger Mark II 22LR with 5.5" bull barrel.

Enjoyed this post, ruprick, as well as your firearm experience that you exhibit on this forum on a regular basis.

I grew up in the city, first firearm experience I had was when a young gang-banger 'showed' me his firearm (a small pistol) on a city bus as I was sitting next to him on my way home from high school. He was friendly, just wanted to show me how cool he was, and I accepted him and assumed docility.

Accepting docility is something I learned on the streets of chicago, the wonderful city of smelly onions.

The neighborhood I lived in...south side, became a neighborhood of black forks sub-planting the white folks who move out to the outer suburbs to escape the movement into the lake front.

I lived through that. There were fights at the beach at the time. even more interesting: there were timelines at the beach. Up to 5:50 the white folks inhabited the beach. After 5:30 black folk inhabited the beach.

This was in the 70s. Or 60s, it was a long time ago.

I got a Sheridan as well for Christmas at age 17. I put a scope on it, and had it dialed in deadly! I shot a butterfly in a tree from around 20 yards, and two wings came floating out of the tree! Future Bob Lee Swagger! LOL!

I never had a scope on my Sheridan.....I made an equally amazing shot once on a squirrel at 80 yards......it was a red squirrel......at the end of a day, Winter hunting....it was running around the crotch of a big tree....I could hardly tell if he was still there....I just shot at what I thought was the possible location of the squirrel....held over the crotch of the tree by about 2 feet......hit the squirrel and still had enough power to break his skin and bust his back....he came tumbling down on the ground....i ran up an shot it dead. About crapped my pants that i hit it that far away.

That is a hell of a long shot for a pellet rifle...only making about 750 FPS....back in the days prior to all these 1200 FPS spring powered rifles.

Winchester 121-Y single-shot .22. It was my 13th birthday present from my dad (20 years ago). At the time my dad was out of a job and we were homeless -- living with my grandparents. He paid $35 for it at a pawn shop. That week he took my out on the plains of southwestern Colorado, and we dealt with a local prairie dog problem.

I think my dad felt guilty about the fact the we had been uprooted and didn't have a home. I know it was a sacrifice for him to buy me that rifle, and that means a lot to me. All through high-school I would take it out about every three months, and completely disassemble and oil it. Just this past year I reblued it and refinished the stock. It isn't worth much to anyone else, but I'll never sell it.

BTW... I'm currently building a custom Savage Cub for my second daughter who will turn 5 on 2/2. I have four daughters and each one will get a custom Cub for their 5th birthday.

Intratec Tec-9... first gun I ever bought. Bad ass one too... threaded barrel, hi-cap mags...

Dumb enough to let it get ripped off by a tweaker though, so I guess it was never meant to be mine... :bawling:
